Abstract

Experiment was conducted to elucidate the potentials of Areca catechu Linn nut as an alternative insecticide towards mosquitoes. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis were mainly used to identify the chemical compounds. Methanolic extracts of Areca catechu nut showed known and unknown bioactive compounds. There are total of 24 bioactive compounds such as sulfurous acid, cyclohexylmethyl pentadecyl ester, 6-Tridecene, 2,2,4,10,12,12 – hexamethyl-7-(3,5,5,t, Furan, 2,3-dihydro-4-(1-methylpropyl)-, (S)-, Sulfurous acid, cyclohexylmethyl heptyl ester and others. Based on previous literatures, thesecompounds pose active insecticidal properties such as larvicidal, pesticidal, insecticides, and fungicides. Although it shows many insecticidal and mosquitocidal properties, this plant deserves further investigations to identify its unknown compounds and specific characteristic.

Keywords: Gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, Areca catechu, insecticides, bioactive compound.
