Abstract

An antifoaming agent is a substance that has special properties on reducing, preventing, and Inhibit the formation of foam. Foam is a compound generated during industrial processing. Silicone-based antifoam is the common antifoaming agent used in the industry. However, usage of silicone oil alone is insufficient and low effective to reduce the formation of foam. Modification of its formulation is needed to enhance the efficiency of this antifoam and to achieve the desired outcome. Thus, in this experiment, silicone oil was used as a silicone-based antifoam and modified by blending with the hydrophobic silica particle with the addition of an additive at appropriate conditions and processes. The formulation was stirred at a moderate speed of 1000 rpm at room temperature for 4 hours. The silicone-based antifoam was tested in different concentrations of surfactant using the Bartsch method, automatic stirrer testing, and gas bubbling method. Silicone-based is investigated in the prevention of foam formation with different concentrations of surfactant. The foam formation is well prevented or destroyed using silicone-based antifoam in a shorter time taken.
