Abstract

The scarcity of fishmeal and soybean meal as major protein sources in animal feeds result in market prices increase. Therefore, an alternative and sustainable protein sources such as insect for replacement in feed ingredients for aquaculture is required to search. Black Soldier Fly Larvae has the highest potential for large-scale production. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of difference inclusion level of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal on the formulated prawn pellet. In preparation of formulated prawn feed, locally available feed ingredients such as turmeric and tapioca starch were purchased and the making process of formulated prawn feed as steam pellet was referred. The formulated prawn feed was manually made with 85%, 80% and 75% of BSFL meal and divided into treatment 1, treatment 2 and treatment 3 respectively. To determine the stability of the steam pellet, water stability test and floatation test were performed triplicates for each treatment. The water stability was carried out on 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes by comparing the stability of steam pellet when exposure to water of each treatment. In addition, floatation test was carried out on 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. It was observed that the water stability and floatability on different inclusion level of BSFL meal were affected by the length of time interval. Three treatment of steam pellet also showed a decreasing trend on water stability and floatability from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. The steam pellet in treatment 1 had the greater water stability (83%) and greater floatability (86.667%) compared to that of treatment 2 and treatment 3 of steam pellet. Overall, three treatment had significant differences (p<0.05) on water stability and floatability.
